ARTISTIC LICENCE

PROJECT GOAL

Europe is still dealing with the fall-out from the largest refugee crisis since World War II. The mass migration of people and the tensions arising from this merging of different cultures is threatening the continents unity.

There is an increasing recognition of the need to achieve better integration of migrants and making a success of migration is a priority objective for all concerned. High quality education enhanced through transnational cooperation is critical if Member States are to successfully reduce inequalities; foster inclusion, and build stable and democratic societies. It is commonplace for adult educators today to work with learners from different educational backgrounds; with variations in the level of school education completed; and with different degrees of motivation and willingness to learn.

While it is agreed that education plays a central role in safeguarding the foundations of European society, supporting social cohesion, enhancing the emergence of a common sense of belonging; and strengthening people’s confidence in public institutions and in our democratic systems; the challenges faced by educators today are unprecedented in the Europe of this modern era. If educators are to build the competence profiles of displaced communities throughout Europe a new more holistic approach to teaching is required. The Artistic Licence project will endeavour to bring the performing arts of storytelling, drama and music into the modern age to help overcome linguistic, social and cultural barriers and build key competences among the migrant, refugee and asylum seeking communities.

IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL THE ARTISTIC LICENCE PROJECT WILL PRODUCE:

  1. A tool-kit of resources to build basic skills and competences that are based around the different performing arts disciplines
  2. A train-the-trainer course for adult educators to enable them harness the potential of the performing arts for building basic skills and key competences
  3. A bespoke online learning environment to support mobile learning
  4. A thought provoking policy paper that looks at the role of alternative educational approaches in addressing the needs of marginalised adults
